Coming off of the unprecedented success of the Hamilton musical soundtrack, Lin-Manuel Miranda began to gather some of music's biggest superstars to create an original album inspired by the original score. When first asked to work on this project, the Hamilton Mixtape, I knew going outside of the box would be an uphill battle. The Hamilton star logo had become so iconic at this point, they knew they wanted to keep the original branding intact as much as possible.
Unfortunately for them the safe route has never been a direction I enjoy. My hope was to take this soundtrack, and it's core audience who were never the typical hip-hop fans, and inject it with the edge and energy of the current urban music landscape. All the while still focusing on the details of the important history of Alexander Hamilton's legacy. Although they loved my work, they disappointingly chose the safest route possible.
Asking an older gentleman to wear gold grillz is something no one can ever take away from me.
